About the League of Women Voters of Denver
PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
The League of Women voters of Denver, a nonpartisan organization,
encourages informed and active participation
in government and influences public policy through education
and advocacy.
Its general objectives are:
To establish positions on public policy through members' participation
and agreement.
To take concerted actions that secure public policies consistent with League
positions.
To enhance citizen participation in federal, state, and local government decisions.
To increase citizen participation in the election process.
VOTER SERVICE
The League is organized around two main functions: Voter Service and Program.
Voter Service provides an important function for the Denver community and is
an extension of our nonpartisan policy. We provide the public with factual and
unbiased information about the government and politics, which guides citizens
to their own opinions on candidates and issues and promotes more active participation
of citizens in government. Voter Service includes providing information on candidates
and issues at election time, encouraging eligible voters to register and understand
the value of declaring a party, sponsoring nonpartisan candidate meetings, and
encouraging citizens to exercise their right and privilege to vote on Election
Day. Non- election year Voter Service work consists of briefings or workshops
on the structure and functions of various levels of government for our members
and other groups and observing and reporting on some 25 governmental agencies.
In all Voter Service Activities, we are neutral.
PROGRAM
League Program deals with a multitude of other topics through which we educate
and advocate. League committees work year-round on topics which include GOVERNMENT,
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS, NATURAL RESOURCES, CITY ISSUES, HEALTH, WOMEN'S AND
FAMILY ISSUES, EDUCATION, AND LEGISLATION.
Throughout the year, these committees "brief" the
rest of the organization, and sometimes the public, on timely
topics in a well-researched
and objective
manner. Only after careful study and consensus does League take positions
on any of these issues. There is usually at least one consensus a year.
Once established,
the national, state, or local League positions and standards can be
the basis for action. Publications describing League positions
at all levels
are available
at our office.
The year's calendar indicates the scope of our interests. Members can attend
any of these briefings in person or hear them summarized in units around the
city.
