Putting Rank Choice Voting on the November Ballot
The League of Women Voters of the United States and of Colorado have long encouraged electoral methods that provide the broadest voter representation possible and are expressive of voter choices. At the local level, LWVD has researched and studied alternative voting methods. There are a variety of alternate methods, both proposed and in use, in other jurisdictions. We have determined that among these many methods, the Ranked Choice Vote—Instant Runoff (RCV) method is most appropriate for Denver municipal elections. Based on our positions and study, LWVD adopted a Resolution supporting RCV for Denver in 2020. See the resolution that was approved by membership in 2020 and more resources on our Rank Choice Voting webpage.
What is Ranked Choice Voting?
Ranked choice voting encourages honest voting over strategic voting. Voters have the option to rank candidates in order of preference: first, second, third and so forth. If your first choice doesn’t have a chance to win, your ballot counts for your next choice. Why support Ranked Choice Voting?
Rank choice voting has many advantages, including being a smarter use of public dollars, simplifying elections for voters, and strengthening civic participation in underrepresented communities. See a full list of advantages on our Rank Choice Voting webpage.
On July 15, the Finance & Governance Committee advanced the bill to the full council. It is now scheduled for a first reading on Monday, August 11 and a second reading on Monday, August 18 before the full council. Councilwoman Parady and Councilman Watson sponsored the bill.
