A Setback for Rank Choice Voting in Denver
FIrst, a thank you to all that contacted your City Council representative to ask them to consider putting a Rank Choice Voting proposal on the fall ballot! It's so important for them to hear from us directly.
Sadly, the effort sponsored by council members Darrell Watson and Sarah Parady failed in a 6-7 vote at the Denver City Council on Tuesday. Council member Kevin Flynn led opposition on the voting method and was joined by council members Flor Alvidrez, Stacie Gilmore, Diana Romero Campbell, Amanda Sawyer, Jamie Torres and Amanda Sandoval.
This is not the end, as the consortium we joined will be working to get the measure on a future ballot by petition. |

We are co-hosting this event with the Colorado Social Legislation Committee. Both of our organizations are advocates on behalf of vulnerable populations. We will discuss how the Federal funding cutbacks, Colorado's budget shortfall, and Denver's tight budget will combine to affect our residents. We will focus on four areas: food insecurity, healthcare/behavioral healthcare, impact on nonprofit service organizations and the budgetary impacts of the federal changes including staffing and administrative costs to local and state revenue. We have invited some great panelists from the Colorado Fiscal Institute, the Bell Policy Center, Hunger Free Colorado, the Colorado Nonprofit Association and the Colorado Consumer Health Initiative. We are asking the speakers to comment on the impact on small cities and rural areas as well as major metropolitan areas.
