Ideas for Engaging Locally

Created by Leaguer Mariam Bouricius and discussed at the April 2025 Briefing, this document can guide your actions locally.

Contact Your Representatives! Often!

Here's How:

1. Find your representatives - Send A Message from LWVCO, Find Your Representative at www.congress.gov, Find My Legislator for the Colorado General Assembly

Here are the members of Congress for Denver:
Representative Diana DeGette – 202-225-4431 (most likely your representative if you live in Denver)
Senator Michael Bennet – 202-224-5852
Senator John Hickenlooper – 202-224-5941

2. Craft a concise message that identifies yourself, if you are a constituent or not and what you want them to do.

League often provides talking points you can use or you can look for topics at https://5calls.org/ (an advocacy platform)

A personal connection or story can make it more effective.
Consider putting this putting your personal story on social media to widen it's impact

Example of the basics:  "Hi, my name is _______ and my zip code is ________.  I am calling to ask you to support/oppose ________.

3. Call, email or use their website contact forms

4. Sending an electronic message or signing a petition is good, however calling is usually more effective.  Do both!

Final Notes:  Contact your representatives even if you think they will reliably vote the way you would like. They are better able to defend their voting record if they can point to support by constituents.
Contact them with positive feedback as well.  Everyone likes to hear that they have done something well.

Immigration

Pressure continues to come from the federal government for state and local officials to support ICE in our cities and Denver was in the spotlight March 5 as Mayor Johnston was questioned by the House oversight committee. If you are looking for ways to support our immigrant and refugee neighbors, here are some actions you can take.
  • Join the Colorado Rapid Response Network by becoming an Observer and reporting what you witness. If you are witnessing ICE Activity:
    • Call 1-844-864-8341 and dial 1 to speak with a volunteer dispatcher 24/7.
    • The dispatcher will ask you for your location and the situation details. They will then send trained volunteers to the scene.
    • If it is an ICE raid, legal observer volunteers will record the event, identify agents on the scene, and inform people involved of their constitutional rights.
    • After the incident, volunteers will follow up to connect people affected with a local member of CIRC’s (Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition) statewide DocuTeam.
    • They will work to further document the event, refer legal resources if necessary, and create a plan of action.
  • Attend a Know Your Rights training (both for yourself and to be in the know about the rights of our immigrant neighbors)
  • Volunteer with or donate to organizations working to provide support to immigrants and refugees.
  • As always, call your local, state, and national officials!

Join Us for Circulator Training: Help Register Voters in Denver!

The League of Women Voters of Denver champions democracy by ensuring every eligible citizen has the opportunity to vote. One of the most impactful ways we do this is through voter registration drives—helping Denverites, as well as Coloradans across the state, get registered and ready to participate in elections.

To make our voter registration efforts as effective and legally compliant as possible, we are offering Circulator Training sessions for League members. These sessions will provide the knowledge and skills needed to conduct voter registration drives in Colorado with confidence and accuracy.

We encourage all members to attend one of our upcoming training sessions:
  • March 13 at 3:00 p.m.
  • March 14 at 3:00 p.m.
  • March 20 at 3:00 p.m.
  • March 21 at 3:00 p.m.

Why Circulator Training is Essential and Required
Voter registration is a fundamental part of democracy, ensuring that every eligible voter in Colorado has the opportunity to participate in elections. However, registering voters requires a thorough understanding of state election laws and best practices to ensure all applications are completed correctly and submitted properly.

Our Circulator Training will cover:

✅ Colorado’s voter registration rules and requirements
✅ The legal responsibilities of circulators
✅ Best practices for engaging with potential voters
✅ How to ensure voter registration forms are complete and valid

Your Role in Empowering Voters
By participating in this training, you will become part of a dedicated team working to expand voter access in Colorado. As a trained circulator, you’ll play a key role in registering new voters, ensuring that more citizens are prepared to cast their ballots in upcoming elections.

Sign Up Today!
We need trained and motivated League members to help make our voter registration efforts successful. If you’re ready to take action, sign up for a Circulator Training session today!
