Participate in Balancing Board Districts

The Denver Public Schools’ (DPS) Board of Education is composed of five representative district and two at-large members. According to Colorado state law, DPS is legally required to balance the population of the representative districts after each United States decennial census.

Currently, the five director districts are not balanced, or of equal population. The difference between District 4 in the Far Northeast and District 2 in the Southwest is 24% which is greater than the state-mandated allowance of 10%. The last time that the Board districts were adjusted was in 2014 after the 2010 Census. The Board is seeking input regarding the proposed changes to its districts in order to meet the legal requirements before they adopt a district map at its meeting on April 18, 2024.  The final map will be in effect for the next regularly scheduled board election in 2025.

The Board will have a virtual meeting on Wednesday, April 10 at 6:00-7:00 p.m. (Zoom link) and has prepared an online survey to obtain community input from Denver residents. You can see the three proposed maps on their website.  View the maps first and then submit the survey by Friday, April 12.

An important detail about the mapping is that the Denver Clerk and Recorders Office created precincts within new districts in order to conduct 2022 and 2023 consolidated elections.  Precinct boundaries cannot be changed in the DPS redistricting process. This is a detail which needs to be stressed in consideration of moving proposed school board director boundary lines.

There are several vacancies on the League of Women Denver Board that need to be filled at our annual meeting in May.  We are confident that the League has members who can fill these vacancies, but we don’t know who you are.  Please contact me to learn more about the specific vacancies and the skills and time required to serve on the Board and to be pressured to help the League stay competent and relevant in the years ahead.
